Cordless Lamp Battery Care: How to Make Your Lamp Last

A cordless lamp gives you warm light wherever you want it: on a dining table, a bookshelf, a bedside or a garden table on a mild evening. The battery inside is what makes that freedom possible, so a little care goes a long way. Look after it well and your lamp will keep its glow, charge after charge, through many seasons. This guide covers the simple habits that make the biggest difference.

How a rechargeable lamp battery works

Most cordless lamps, including the ones in our table and floor lamp collection, use a built-in lithium-ion battery charged by USB. Lithium-ion is the same family of battery found in phones and laptops. It is light, holds plenty of power for its size and doesn't need to be fully drained before recharging. That last point surprises a lot of people: the old advice to "run it flat first" came from older battery types and doesn't apply here.

How long a lamp runs on one charge depends on the model, the battery size and above all the brightness you choose. Dimmer settings use less power, so a lamp left on a soft glow will last noticeably longer than one on full brightness. Check the product page or the instructions that come with your lamp for its own guidance, because every design is a little different.

Charging: the everyday habits that matter

Use a sensible USB plug

Charge with the cable supplied and a good-quality UK USB plug, the kind you would trust with your phone. Very cheap, unbranded chargers can give an unstable supply, which is hard on any battery. If your lamp came with a USB cable but no plug, a reputable 5V phone charger is usually the right match. Check your lamp's instructions to be sure.

Top up rather than run flat

Lithium-ion batteries are happiest kept somewhere in the middle. Topping up when the light starts to dim, rather than waiting for it to go out completely, is kinder over the long term. Many people simply pop their lamp on charge for an afternoon once or twice a week, depending on how much they use it.

Don't leave it on charge for days

Once the indicator shows a full charge, unplug it. Modern lamps generally manage charging sensibly, but there is no benefit in leaving a lamp connected for days on end. A good rhythm is to charge in the daytime, when you are around, and enjoy the lamp in the evening.

Charge somewhere cool and clear

Charge on a hard, flat surface away from soft furnishings, direct sunlight and radiators. Batteries dislike heat, and a little airflow around the lamp while it charges is good practice. Avoid charging under cushions, on a duvet or tucked behind curtains.

Getting the most from each charge

A few small choices help your lamp glow for longer every evening:

  • Dim it down. A softer setting is often more atmospheric anyway, and it stretches the battery. Lamps with stepless dimming, such as the Cordless Touch Table Lamp, let you find exactly the right level.
  • Choose warm white for evenings. Many lamps offer several colour temperatures. Warm white feels calmer after dark and suits winding down.
  • Switch off when you leave the room. It sounds obvious, but cordless lamps are easy to forget because there is no plug to remind you.
  • Use the right lamp for the job. For short bursts of light at night, a motion-sensor light such as our Motion Sensor Night Lights only switches on when needed, saving your table lamp's battery for the evening.

Caring for your lamp through the seasons

Cold rooms and conservatories

Lithium-ion batteries can feel sluggish in the cold, so a lamp kept in a chilly conservatory or porch may seem to run down faster in winter. That is normal and usually recovers when the lamp warms up. Let a cold lamp come to room temperature before charging it.

Using a lamp outdoors

A cordless lamp on the patio table is one of life's simple pleasures on a summer evening. Unless your lamp is specifically described as suitable for outdoor use, bring it inside afterwards and keep it out of the rain and dew. For permanent outdoor lighting, a dedicated solar light from our garden and outdoor collection is the better choice.

Storing a lamp you won't use for a while

If you are putting a lamp away for a few months, perhaps a festive lamp after Christmas, charge it to around half rather than full or empty. Store it somewhere cool and dry, and give it a top-up every few months so the battery never sits completely flat for long.

Cleaning your cordless lamp

Always switch off and unplug before cleaning. A soft, dry microfibre cloth is ideal for most bases and shades; our Microfibre Magic Cleaning Cloths are a good match. Fabric shades, like the one on our Cordless Fabric Table Lamp, respond well to a gentle brush or the soft attachment of a vacuum. Never submerge a lamp or spray liquid directly onto it, and keep the charging port dry and free of dust.

Signs your lamp needs attention

Every rechargeable battery gradually holds a little less charge over its life; that is simply how the chemistry works. Get in touch with us rather than carrying on if you notice any of the following:

  • The lamp becomes unusually hot while charging or in use.
  • The body looks swollen, cracked or misshapen.
  • The lamp won't charge at all with a known-good cable and plug.
  • There is a burning or chemical smell.

If anything like this happens, stop using the lamp, unplug it and contact us with your order number. We will help you sort it out. Never try to open the lamp or replace the battery yourself unless the manufacturer's instructions say you can.

Choosing your next cordless lamp

If you are still deciding, think about where the lamp will live and how you will use it. A compact touch lamp suits a bedside, a taller adjustable design suits a sofa side table, and a sculptural shape like the Cordless Mushroom Table Lamp or the Crystal Diamond Table Lamp becomes a feature in its own right. For walls, the Cordless Sunset Wall Light and Magnetic Rechargeable Wall Light give you light without an electrician.

  • Top up regularly, and avoid running the battery completely flat.
  • Unplug once fully charged.
  • Charge on a hard surface away from heat and soft furnishings.
  • Dim the light to make each charge last longer.
  • Store at around half charge if putting the lamp away.
  • Clean with a dry, soft cloth, and keep the port dry.

Treat your cordless lamp kindly and it will reward you with many cosy evenings of soft, portable light.
